The Twin Palaces on the seaside of Meclis-i Mebusan Street were built by the architect Garabet Amira Balyan on the order of Sultan Abdülmecit for his two daughters Cemile Sultan and Münire Sultan between 1856-1859. Cemile Sultan Palace served as parliaments “Meclis-i Mebusan” and “Meclis-i Ayan” during the late Ottoman period. In 1926 it became the Academy of Fine Arts. The archives and library were destroyed along with the building in a fire in 1948. After reconstruction, led by Sedad Hakkı Eldem, the palace reopened in 1953 and was used as a military headquarters. Today these two buildings are home to Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.

Münire Sultan Sarayı ise, Cumhuriyet’in ilk yıllarında III. Kolordu Komutanlığı Karargahı olarak kullanıldı. Çeşitli eğitim kurumlarına ev sahipliği yaptıktan sonra 1970’te Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi’nin kullanımına verilen saray, Sedad Hakkı Eldem’in projesiyle yeniden inşa edilerek 1975’te hizmete açıldı. Binalar günümüzde Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi tarafından kullanılmaktadır.
