The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite flew over Japan on September 4 and acquired a true-color image of Typhoon Jebi shortly after landfall.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Around noon (local time) on September 4, 2018, the most powerful storm to strike Japan in 25 years came ashore on the eastern end of Shikoku, the smallest of the country’s four main islands, bringing gusts of winds up to 129 mph (207 km/h). Fortunately, Typhoon Jebi had weakened shortly before landfall from peak intensity only a couple of days earlier, when it carried maximum sustained winds of 175 mph (282 km/h).

After landfall, Jebi crossed the southern coast of the main island of Honshu near Kobe, hammering the regions with high winds and heavy rain. The vicious storm is being blamed for 11 fatalities and as many as 300 injuries in Japan. Typhoon Jebi also caused major damage to the bridge leading into Kansai International Airport near Osaka when winds drove a large tanker ship into it, shutting down the facility for an indeterminate amount of time. The storm cut power to over 2 million residents, according to a story in Japan Times, damaged buildings, and halted train service in affected areas.

On the afternoon of September 5, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued its last warning on the storm, as Jebi weakened substantially and moved back over the Sea of Japan.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite flew over Japan on September 4 and acquired a true-color image of Typhoon Jebi shortly after landfall. The convective bands – which carry heavy rain – reach over much of Honshu in the north and the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu in the south.
