Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On July 1, 2018, Tropical Cyclone Prapiroon was strengthening as it spun towards landfall on Japan. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the storm on that same date. Prapiroon was spinning in the East China Sea off the coast of mainland China at the time this image was acquired. The storm sported a tight apostrophe shape and circulated around a closed eye.

Prapiroon formed from a tropical depression east of the Philippines on June 29. The system continued to strengthen as it moved north-northeast, reaching typhoon status with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h) late on July 1. On July 2, maximum sustained winds reached peak at 85 mph (137 km/h) and then Prapiroon began to weaken as it interacted with increased vertical wind shear. The storm lashed Japan and South Korea with heavy wind and rain.

By July 5 the remnants of Post-Tropical Cyclone Prapiroon were traveling over Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that advisories for flooding, heavy rain, dense fog, and high wind in coastal areas remained for much of Hokkaido while the Abashiri Chiho area remained under a warning.
