Summary[edit]

Description

U.S.S. Birmingham battle damage (BUMED 09-7921-14), U.S. Navy BUMED Library and Archives

Description: "U.S.S. Birmingham suffers 3rd battle damage. Having survived trial by fire twice earlier in the war, the light cruiser U.S.S. Birmingham faced her 3rd test on 05/04/1945 when a Jap kamikaze bearing a 500 pound bomb crashed on her decks just aft of the number two turret during action off Okinawa."

The U.S.S. Birmingham was commissioned in January 1943 and suffered heavy damage throughout World War II. The ship was hit by two bombs and a torpedo in 1943 during the Battle of Empress August Bay after which she was retired for repairs until 1944. In 1944, Birmingham took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf when 239 crew members were killed while trying to assist the aircraft carrier Princeton. She again retired for repairs but again rejoined the Pacific Fleet in 1945 for the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, in which she was hit again by a Japanese kamikaze plane. Birmingham was placed out of commission in 1946.
