Summary[edit]

Description September 2017. Porters help tourists tracking gorillas by carrying their bags and offering assistance on the steep slippery traiis into the park. Being a porter is considered good work for under-educated younger people (as long as they can speak english) and it connects them to the protection of the park and importance of conservation. They make about US$15 per day and the Biwindi Porters have associated in order to help each other make the most of it, including savings cashflow education and loan programs, as well as a reforestation program to help suppliment income when they don't get a porting job for the day. There are about 400 porters working the various parks and tracking locations in the region. Buhoma, Uganda. Photograph by Jason Houston for USAID
