English: AL ASAD, IraqA CH-46 Seaknight helicopter, belonging to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 161, is unloaded from and Air Force C-17 transport aircraft Aug. 15. Each helicopter took seven hours to prepare for air transport. After 30 hours transiting, around 10 Marines will work close to eight hours per aircraft to reassemble the CH-46, and prepare it for a functional check flight. The Greyhawks, from Miramar, Calif., are returning to Iraq for their third deployment in support of Iraqi Freedom. After landing it took several hours to offload the CH-46 and its engines and rotors. The C-17 can carry payloads up to 169,000 pounds, and the helicopter was a perfect fit at 11,000 pounds and 45 feet long. |
