Speich earned the medal for his actions in Afghanistan on April 24, 2005 which resulted in the degraded ability of enemy forces and saved the lives of numerous coalition soldiers. Speich was serving as a combat advisor and patrol leader with Special Forces Operational Detachment, Company C., 1st Battallion, 7th Special Forces Group, Combined-Joint Special Operations Task Force Afghanistan.
