Description

The decommissioned U.S. Navy destroyers USS Vogelgesang (DD-862) and USS Steinaker (DD-863) at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island (USA), before their transfer to the Mexican Navy in November 1982. Vogelgesang and Steinaker were decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 24 February 1982, transferred to Mexico.
Vogelgesang was renamed ARM Quetzalcoatl (D-101). She was decommissioned by the Mexican Navy in late 2002. On 24 November 2006, the ship was scuttled as an artificial reef.

Steinaker became ARM Netzahualcóyotl (D-102). She was the last active Gearing-class destroyer and was retired in 2014 and was slated to be sunk as an artificial reef.
