Description
English: An Honorable Leader. Chief Joseph. A leader among the Nez Perce, he led his band living in the Wallowa Valley of eastern Oregon on a 1500 miles exodus in an attempt to flee from pursuing Army forces. He fell short of his goal when most were captured close to the Canadian /American border in 1877. Surrendering after the battle at Bear Paw Mountain , he said " From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever." (Edward S. Godfrey Collection.)
