English: Off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. (Jul. 27, 2002) --Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Mark Chase records divers’ depths and times as they dive 240 ft. to the sunken civil war-era ironclad ship USS Monitor. Petty Officer Chase is a Diver with Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2 (MDSU-2) located aboard the Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Va. The divers of MDSU-2 are aiding in the recovering the ship’s gun turret, 11-inch Dahlgren cannons, and other artifacts from the historic vessel. The famed warship sank during a storm Dec. 31, 1862, off Cape Hatteras, N.C., while towed to Beaufort, S.C. Four officers and 12 men were lost with the ship.
