English: The Arabian Gulf (Mar. 31, 2003) -- Aviation ordnancemen watch over Joint Stand-Off Weapons (JSOWs) as an S-3B Viking launches from one of four steam powered catapults aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). The JSOW is a 1,000-pound smart bomb that can be launched from distances up to 40 miles from its target. The weapon is called joint because it can be dropped from Air Force, Navy or Marine aircraft. Kitty Hawk and Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) are currently deployed with coalition forces in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the multi-national coalition effort to liberate the Iraqi people, eliminate Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction, and end the regime of Saddam Hussein.
