English: Wash., D.C. (Apr. 4, 2003) -- Former Cleveland Indian and National Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Feller shows the Honorable H.T. Johnson, acting Secretary of the Navy, a photo of USS Alabama, the ship on which he served for 4 years during WWII as an anti-aircraft gunner and where he was decorated with five campaign ribbons with eight battle stars. Feller, quoted as saying "Baseball in the Navy always was much more fun than it had been in the major leagues," pitched an impressive fastball that earned him the nicknames "Rapid Robert" and "Bullet Bob." He spent 18-years with the Cleveland Indians, amassing 266 victories and 2,581 strikeouts while leading the league in strikeouts seven times. U.S. Navy photo by Capt. Kevin Wensing. (RELEASED) |
