DescriptionUS Navy 031113-N-6236G-001 over art for the new book USS Ranger, The Navy's First Flattop From Keel To Mast, 1934-1946.jpg |
English: Naval Historical Center, Washington, D.C. (File photo) -- Cover art for the new book "USS Ranger, The Navy's First Flattop From Keel To Mast, 1934-1946" by Naval Historical Center historian Robert J. Cressman. Ranger was the first American aircraft carrier to be designed and built as such, but it was determined to be too small for the U.S.'s emerging large carrier doctrine of the early 1940's. However, it was one of the few American aircraft carriers to operate in the European Theater of Operations during World War II, participating in the 1942 Invasion of North Africa and air strikes against German shipping in the Arctic Ocean and Norway during 1943.
