Summary[edit]

Description
English: Garapan, Saipan (June 15, 2004) – A single red flower on a memorial commemorates the 60th Anniversary celebration of Saipan and Tinian from Japanese forces during WWII. The memorial was established at the American Memorial Park at Garapan, Saipan in remembrance of all the people that gave their lives during the liberation of Saipan and Tinian. June 15th marks 60 years since the day the United States invaded the Japanese-mandated islands of Saipan and Tinian, and the battles that followed devastated the Northern Mariana Islands. More than 25,000 people were killed in June and July of 1944 in one of the bloodiest battles in history. To survive, some civilians hid in caves and in the jungles, but tragically some chose to throw themselves off of limestone cliffs into the jungles and the sea to evade capture by the Americans.
