SEA OF JAPAN (July 27, 2004) - Machinery Repairman 3rd Class Desmond Nelson of Stratford, Conn., uses a lathe to carve grooves into a piece of stainless steel in USS Kitty Hawk's (CV 63) machine shop. An asset to the entire strike group, the machine shop can fabricate parts and materials otherwise difficult to obtain while at sea. The Kitty Hawk Strike Group is one of seven carrier strike groups (CSGs) involved in Summer Pulse 2004, demonstrating the Navy's ability to provide credible combat power across the globe in five theaters with other U.S., allied, and coalition military forces. Summer Pulse is the Navy's first test of its new Fleet Response Plan (FRP). Currently under way in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR), Kitty Hawk demonstrates power projection and sea control as the world's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, operating from Yokosuka, Japan.
