English: Arabian Gulf (Nov. 9, 2004) - Aviation Ordnancemen, assigned to the “Rampagers” of Strike Fighter Squadron Eight Three (VFA-83), finish loading two of the Navy's latest Satellite Guided Bomb, the GBU-38, aboard the conventionally powered aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67). The GBU-38 is a 500-pound Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) that uses a standard Mk-82 bomb, and was developed for precision bombing in urban warfare. The Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) is a guidance kit that converts existing unguided bombs into precision-guided "smart" munitions. The tail section contains an inertial navigational system (INS) and a global positioning system (GPS). JDAM improves the accuracy of unguided bombs in any weather condition. Carrier Air Wing Seventeen (CVW-17) aircraft aboard Kennedy are supporting ground troops in Fallujah, Iraq, under Operation Al Fajr (New Dawn). Kennedy and embarked CVW-17 are currently on deployment in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 3rd Class Joshua Karsten (RELEASED) |
