English: Washington, D.C. (Mar. 8, 2005) - The Lincoln Memorial looms over the Commemorative Area of the National World War II Memorial. The Commemorative Area recognizes the sacrifice of America's WWII generation and the contribution of our allies. A field of 4,000 sculpted gold stars on the Freedom Wall commemorates the more than 400,000 Americans who gave their lives, and symbolized the sacrifice of families across the nation. Established by the American Battle Monuments Commission, the memorial honors all military veterans of World War II, the citizens on the home front, the nation at large, and the high moral purpose and idealism that motivated the nation's call to arms. The memorial was officially dedicated on May 29, 2004. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 2nd Class Daniel J. McLain (RELEASED) |
