English: Caribbean Sea (Aug. 12, 2005) - U.S. Navy Lt. Grant Hartfield, foreground, looks for vessels of interest with Peruvian Navy Capt. Jorge Moreno aboard the Peruvian frigate BAP Villavicencio (FM 52). Lt. Hartfield is the Combat Systems Officer assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Thomas S. Gates (CG 51). PANAMAX is a multinational training exercise in defense of the Panama Canal involving 15 countries. The Panama Canal is critical to the free flow of trade and goods in the Western Hemisphere and the entire world. Capt Moren is also the Pacific Commander of CTG 138.30.1 for the exercise and Lt Hartfield is the Combat Systems Officer aboard the USS Thomas S. Gates (CG 52) which is also participating in PANAMAX. PANAMAX is an exercise to develop a multinational response to threats against the Panama Canal. This year's exercise involves 15 countries, including naval forces from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Panama, Peru and the U.S., along with observers from Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, France, Mexico and Uruguay. The exercise will be conducted Aug. 4-17 and will consist of scenario-driven surface, air, mine counter-measures and special operations events involving detection, monitoring and interdiction of vessels.
