The purpose of ANNUALEX is to improve bilateral interoperability, defend Japan against maritime threats and to improve capability for surface warfare, air defense and undersea warfare. USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63), At Sea (Nov. 12, 2005) - Cmdr. Craig Kauber, USS Kitty Hawk's (CV 63) Air Boss mans primary flight deck control during an Alert Five aircraft launch as Kitty Hawk transits the Straits of Tsugaru. Alert Five is a five minute response time to launch aircraft off the flight deck. Kitty Hawk, the Navy's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, recently transited the Straits of Tsugaru as part of a bilateral exercise with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Annual Exercise 2005 is designed to improve both force's capability for coordinated, bilateral operations in the defense of Japan.
