English: Atlantic Ocean (May 26, 2006) - Demonstrating the proper use of a portable exothermic cutting unit (PECU), Damage Control Fireman Apprentice Scott Edwards lights up the hangar bay aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Saipan (LHA 2). A quarter inch steel slab was used to show how the PECU could cut holes to access damaged spaces indirectly and aid in firefighting efforts. Saipan will be participating in a multi-national combined exercise with North African and European forces this summer during exercise PHOENIX EXPRESS. The exercise will provide U.S. and allied forces an opportunity to participate in diverse maritime training scenarios helping to increase maritime domain awareness and strengthen emerging and enduring partnerships.
