USS KITTY HAWK, at sea, (July 26, 2007) - Yeoman Seaman Jessica Gardner, 20, of Vancouver, Wash., and Yeoman Seaman Whitney Utter, 20, of Lafayette, La., toss flowers into the sea during the memorial ceremony for USS Lexington (CV 2) on USS Kitty Hawk's (CV 63) fantail July 25. Kitty Hawk was passing the spot where Lexington was sunk during the Battle of the Coral Sea on May 8, 1942, with the loss of 216 crewmen. After being struck by two torpedoes and three bombs, then suffering a large explosion of gas fumes, Lexington's commanding officer, Capt. Frederick C. Sherman, ordered the crew to abandon ship. An American destroyer later fired two torpedoes into the ship, sinking it, rather than allow it to possibly be taken by Japanese forces. The Battle of the Coral Sea was the first naval battle fought entirely by aircraft. Kitty Hawk is two months into its summer deployment from Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.
