Image title | 071026-N-7367K-020 GUAM (Oct. 26, 2007) - Senior Chief Builder E. Dan Walker, the senior enlisted leader of U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 1 Guam Detachment, plays with the students at Chief Brodie Memorial Elementary School in Guam after their 47th Annual Commemoration Ceremony. On Sept. 19, 1960, while Chief Builder Clifford Brodie and fellow Seabees were building the school, they were called to assist with the Douglas DC-6AB plane crash on Mt. Barrigada, Guam, which killed 80 people, including American servicemembers and dependants. After relentlessly working at the crash site day and night, Brodie and his men returned to the school to continue construction. The school was named after Brodie because of his loyalty and dedication to the Guam community. Brodie passed away in his sleep Sept. 20, the night after the crash. His battalion returned and completed the school's construction. NMCB 1 is currently deployed to several locations in the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Micronesia providing responsive military construction support to U.S. military operations.
