English: ARLINGTON, Va. (June 13, 2009) The Navy League of the United States presents Capt. Richard Phillips, left, with the Admiral Arleigh Burke Leadership Award, at the Westin Arlington Gateway. Phillips was the master of the container ship MV Maersk Alabama when Somali pirates hijacked it on April 8, 2009. Concerned for his crew, Capt. Phillips offered himself up to the pirates as a hostage in return for their release. On April 12, 2009, U.S. naval forces, including Navy SEALs, rescued Phillips from a one of the Maersk's lifeboats as the pirates attempted to escape.
