The selectees are participating in the pre-dawn event to commemorate the sinking of the World War II cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA 35). The ship sank in the South Pacific Ocean after being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on July 30, 1945 after delivering parts of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima to Tinian Island.
