Description

The endemic Malagasy genus Uncarina (Pedaliaceae) comprises at least 9 species. Its centre of diversity is the Spiny Forest realm of SW Madagascar.

The large colourful Uncarina flowers develop prickly fruits which, once mature and dried out, fall to the ground and accumulate around the base of adult plants, often in large numbers. Midgley and Iling (2009) argued that its spiny fruits are trample burrs that evolved to be dispersed on the feet of the extinct elephant bird (Aepyornis). <a href="http://www.scielo.org.za/scielo.php?pid=S0038-23532009000600021&script=sci_arttext" rel="nofollow">www.scielo.org.za/scielo.php?pid=S0038-23532009000600021&...</a>

In SW Madagascar these fruits are locally used to trap small mammals, including rodents and bats, for consumption.
