Notes Mavis Draffin was aged 19 when she became part of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), joining the Transport Division of the Whangarei branch of the NZ Red Cross in 1941. Her uniform was made at 'Crosby's Corner', Whangarei. The twenty-three women in the Division mainly drove ambulances, but also learnt how to change tyres and service vehicles. They also occasionally made convoy runs to Auckland in heavy duty army trucks.
