DescriptionUnited 947 at Amsterdam - Flickr - skinnylawyer.jpg |
This is the daily departure to Washington Dulles - and for me, the end of a weeklong nightmare. With its out-of-control sexism and homophobia propagated by Muslim youth, Amsterdam was easily the absolute worst destination I ever had the misfortune of visiting to date. A rude surprise too, as Amsterdam's reputation is based on NOT being sexist and homophobic. I am so glad to be heading home on United, listening to a dedicated Melissa Etheridge channel on board, instead of prolonging the Amsterdam agony by several more hours on one of the KLM planes in the back. The mere sight of this plane as I emerged into the departure concourse was already a huge relief. Earlier in the year, thanks to the hard work of the City of San Francisco and its gay rights activists, United Airlines, with a major hub in San Francisco, had become the first US airline to extend employee benefits to unmarried same-sex partners. It indeed was a very Sapphic experience to fly United in 1999. (And yes, I will be in San Francisco by the evening.) Toward the end of the flight, I was able to enjoy a distant view of New York City while flying over Tappan Zee Bridge, accompanied by the captain's history lecture on the founding of New Amsterdam, as well as the music of another musician I love, Sarah McLachlan, playing from my portable CD player. Another lovely moment to savor as I left the horrors of Old Amsterdam behind. This flight is the key reason why United has been my favorite airline ever since (and also by extension, why I would never consider KLM). And a similar experience would repeat on May Day 2008, as I left another hellhole (Indianapolis) a day early on a United flight. The Sapphic vibe on United has also been well appreciated whenever I fly back into my current home, Los Angeles, where Korean Christian immigrants have created just as much of a homophobic hellhole, not to mention whenever I fly into their hometown Seoul with its new far-right government. (And needless to say, Korean Air, which supports the theocrats and incidentally is KLM's alliance partner as well, will never get my business.) Flight 947 continued to run until September 2011, when the flight number was changed to 125, and the equipment changed to an ex-Continental 757. United also offers services from Amsterdam to Chicago on its legacy fleet, and to Houston and Newark on the Continental fleet. "Fly the Lesbian-Friendly Skies" N771UA, Boeing 777-200 (XC) On a more aviation fanatic footnote, N771UA was the third Boeing 777 off the assembly line. Under test registration N7773, it first took to the skies as part of the Boeing 777 testing and certification program, on 2 August 1994, the very day when I happened to be visiting Boeing's Everett plant. It was delivered to United on 27 November 1995, after testing and rehabilitation. I have also flown on the fourth and fifth 777s off the line, N773UA and N772UA respectively. |
