DescriptionUnited States Air Force - North American Aviation F-100A Super Sabre fighter plane (44054420192).jpg |
(South Dakota Air and Space Museum collection, Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City, South Dakota, USA) The F-100A Super Sabre is a United States Air Force plane used in the 1950s to 1970s. It is a single-seat, single-jet engine fighter plane. From exhibit signage: F-100A Super Sabre Top Speed - 860 miles per hour Crew - 1 Range - Continental Payload - Four 20 millimeter cannons, two Bulldog missiles, four Sidewinder missiles, rockets, or a maximum of 7,000 pounds of bombs. The Misty FAC Missions In 1967, a group of F-100 pilots in Vietnam adopted the call sign Misty and tried something new. They became Forward Air Controllers (FACs). This job of flying low to mark targets was usually done by much slower planes, like our O-2 Skymaster. The "Fast FACs" could work in areas that were too dangerous for slower planes.
