De Kooning foi um pintor figurativista, sobretudo retratista, e usou o guache, aguarela, pastel e técnicas mistas. Foi também escultor e desenhador. BIOGRAFIA Os Pais de Willem de Kooning, Leendert de Kooning e Cornelia Nobel, divorciaram-se quando ele tinha cerca de cinco anos de idade. De Kooning foi criado pela sua mãe e seu padrasto. A sua formação artística incluiu oito anos na Academia de Roterdão de Belas Artes e Técnicas. Nos anos 1920 Willem trabalhou como assistente do diretor de arte de um departamento de Rotterdam Store. De Kooning era um dos trinta e oito artistas escolhidos a partir de um convite geral a Nova York para desenhar e pintar 105 murais públicos na Feira de 1939 Mundial de Nova York. O seu colega muralista, David Margolis relatou mais tarde as suas 1932 viagens a Savoy Ballroom e "o grande interesse no Jazz" de De Kooning. Aos 21 anos, em 1926, embarcou clandestinamente para os Estados Unidos. Instalou-se em Nova Iorque e viveu de pequenos expediente. Descobriu Greenwich Village, o bairro dos artistas, e ligou-se aos primeiros pintores abstratos americanos, decidindo, em 1935, dedicar-se inteiramente à pintura. Em 1937, juntou a partícula "de" ao seu nome para o tornar mais acolhedor. Conheceu Arshile Gorky, com quem partilhou um atelier em 1947 e, tal como ele, se interessava pela pintura abstrata mais que pela figurativa. Graças aos seus conselhos, de Kooning « aprendeu a manter uma forma plana, dando a ideia de um volume ». Ambos foram inspirados por Joan Miró e Pablo Picasso. Em abril de 1948 expôs pela primeira vez sozinho, na Charles Egan Gallery. Em 1950 lançou uma série sobre as mulheres intitulada « Women », e representando Marilyn Monroe, seguida de outra série sobre os negros dos Estados Unidos. Começou-se a falar do "rosa de Kooning". em 1961 instalou-se num grande atelier em East Hampton. Recusou categoricamente pertenças ou afiliações a movimentos artísticos, pois segundo o que deixou escrito: « le style est une supercherie. [...] C'était une idée affreuse de chercher, comme Van Doesburg ou Mondrian, à produire, de toute pièces, un style. » É porém catalogado como artista do expressionismo abstrato.
