Le tableau a été exposé par l'artiste au Salon de 1838 (numéro 157 du livret) avec la description suivante :

"Valentine de Milan ayant appris l'amour du duc d'Orléans, son mari, pour Odette, la fit venir. "C'est donc vous, lui dit-elle, qui avez voulu me faire tort de l'amour de Monseigneur, et qui croyez, après cela, qu'il n'y a qu'à vous agenouiller pour que je vous pardonne." / Odette se releva vivement : "J'ai mis un genou en terre, Madame, parce que vous êtes une grande princesse, et non pour que vous me pardonniez, car, grâce au ciel, je n'ai aucune faute à me reprocher envers vous." / (Alex[andre] Dumas, Isabel de Bavière)"
