Notes

The sitter was the wife of the Emperor Charles VI and mother of the Empress Maria Theresa. Frans van Stampart was a court painter from 1698 to the Emperors Leopold I and Charles VI and he painted the sitter on numerous occasions, of which a full-length example is in the Lobkowicz Collection at Nelahozeves Castle, Czech Republic.

Oil on canvas which is lined and attached to an oval wooden stretcher. The paint layer is stable but worn in some areas with areas of retouching, for example in the sitter's chest and black dress. The varnish is yellowed and degraded, becoming opaque and hazy in some areas. The gilding on the frame has been repainted with bronze paint which is starting to darken.
