Vegetarian maki sushi - Sushiko AUD3 --- A new Japanese restaurant is always worth a try. We didn't have too high hopes for this place because we could tell that it wasn't owned/run by Japanese. We were right. It was a young guy with ties to HK, but born here. He suggested we try the agedashi tofu, so we did. It wasn't bad, but I got a piece of tofu that had a goopy batter, which should have been light and spongey. The other pieces were fine though. He also suggested a sukiyaki beef main, but we opted for the gyu don, beef with egg sauce on rice. This was quite nice, but there was something typically Chinese about it. We noticed the ramen with pork bone soup, so we ordered it, ever hopeful that we might get a decent Kyushu-style tonkotsu milky bone soup. The soup was good, for a Chinese pork bone soup. Somehow, it was missing something. Being a kaiten sushi place, wee had to try some sushi. The sushi doing the rounds on the conveyor belt were predictably semi-dried out, verging on crusty! Encouraged by the friendly and enthusiastic owner, we decided to order a tuna and eel to see if that was any better. Nope. One piece of tuna was still on the icy side, and both plates had stone cold, hard rice that wasn't flavoured enough. So much for a second chance. Also on offer was a shabu shabu Japanese hotpot, for AUD25 a set, to serve 2, including a plate of sushi and a dessert. Would we go back? Perhaps for the ramen, but definitely not the sushi.
