Title
Vessel, Post Medieval, Black Glazed Ware
Description
English: An assemblage of 19 sherds for various vessel and date with a total assemblage weight of 532g. 4 sherds of roof tile weighing a total of 197g with a possible date between Medieval – Modern. 1 fragment weighing 32g of ceramic building material (thick tile or brick), possibly Roman. 1 sherd of Post-Medieval red ware, glazed with patches of mid brown/orange, dating 15th – 18th century and weighing 9g. 2 sherds of Lyvden Stanydon (spelling?) ware from Northamptonshire weighing 70g and dating 1200 – 1350. 4 sherds of post-Medieval black glaze ware weighing 124g and dating 16th – 18th century. 3 sherds of shelly ware weighing 54g and dating Roman – Medieval. 4 sherds of various types of sandy ware totalling 46g and dating 1200 – 1500. One of the sandy ware sherds is a fragment of a pierced vessel, weighing 17g of the total 46g. It was pierced from the outside in suggesting that it could have been a closed vessel in shape, such as a jar or jug, possible uses might include use as a colander or cheese press. The 'cheese press/colander' sherd is the only sherd in this assemblage to have been found in a different but near-by field. The 'cheese press/colander' sherd was found in a different field c.300km directly to the north-east.
