Notes | Liège book prizes were given from 17c by the city authorities. A workshop which maintained a monopoly on book prizes 1608-1637, is known. Another example with the same coat-of-arms is reproduced in 1) Quatre siècle, 1989, p. 98-99, n. 38 on Maurice Newport, Sereniss. Principi Carolo secundo May. Brit. Fran. Et Hib. Regi Votum candidum vivat rex. Editio tertia. Autore Mauritio Neoporto Anglo, Londini, 1676 (see Armorial belge, p. 571, n. II; J. Brassinne, La Reliure mosane, pl. LV, XLVI; P. Delrée, Contribution, p. 138-139, pl. II).; 2) Quatre siècles, 1993, p. 76-77, n. 18 on Barthélemy Fisen, Sancta Legia Romanae Ecclesia Filia sive Historia Ecclesia Leodensis, Leodii, E typographia Ioannis Tournay, 1642 (see J. Brassinne, La reliure mosane, p. 32, pl. LIII (variant); C. Coppens, De Prijs, p. 166-168; P. Delrée, Contribution, p. 6-8, 14, pl. I,A (variant); Quatre siècles, 1989, n. 32; X. de Theux, Bibliographie Liégeoise, col. 149-150). The edition of this Liège Church history was sponsored by the city mayor and often given as prize to the local Jesuit college. The city allowed a yearly sum to the college director to buy books provided with the town coat-of-arms and offered in his name. Towards 1750, the city paid directly bookshops. To the book, always tooled with the coat-of arms, an "ex libris"glued on the flying-leaf was added. This binding is provided without the "LG" cypher", whose presence, as on BL example, is an unpublished variant of the tool described by P. Delrée: the engraving shows some execution differences. National Luxembourg library owns an analogous XVII th century Belgian binding on D. Mariae Aspricollis scvtum...Alterum item Lipsii Scutum ab eodem Cl. Dausqueio. Vtrumq. Adversus Agricolae Thracii Satyricas Petitiones, Douai, Jean Bogard, 1616, shelfmark L.P.24. offered as prize book by Liege town. This tool alone within a fillet or associated with rolls or singles tools, was adopted on books offered to the Jesuit college in Liège between 1635 and 1686. | |||
