Description

Although built by Voisin, this 1907 aeroplane is more often referred to as the Farman I. At that time Voisin named its aeroplanes after the customer, so this was correctly the Voisin-Farman 1. On 13th January 1908 Henri Farman flew it around an officially observed 1-kilometre closed circuit, including the take-off and landing. As the first aviator to complete this, he won the 50,000 francs Deutsch de la Meurthe-Archdeacon ‘Grand Prix de l'Aviation’ and a place in aviation history. This replica represents the aeroplane after it was re-covered with rubberised balloon fabric rather than the original varnished silk and was redesignated as the Farman Ibis. Built for the museum in 1920, it is on display in the Pioneers Hall. Musée de l'air et de l'espace. Le Bourget Airport, Paris, France.
