Walter Reed Portrait (NCP 000876), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Walter Reed in 1876 at age 25. Major Walter Reed, M.D., U.S. Army was a U.S. Army physician most notably recognized for his research into yellow fever in Cuba. Reed led a team which discovered that yellow fever was spread by a mosquito species, rather than direct contact, which spurred epidemiological and biomedical study into tropical diseases. Reed was also the curator of the Army Medical Museum, now the National Museum of Health and Medicine, from 1893-1902. Donated by Holt, Rufus & Army Medical Library April 20, 1943.
