Summary[edit]
DescriptionWashington - Looking West from Washington Monument (1988) (4383150543).jpg |
Looking west from the Washington Monument in 1988. The Reflecting Pool and Lincoln Memorial are in the left foreground. Arlington Memorial Bridge goes across the Potomac River to Arlington, Virginia. The Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, Theodore Roosevelt Island, and the Rosslyn section of Arlington are in the center background. Constitution Avenue runs diagonally at the right. Constitution Gardens, with the lake, has replaced the temporary Navy and Army building, which were demolished in 1970. Virginia Avenue is at the right edge of the photo. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is beyond Constitution Gardens. Its most famous component is the Memorial Wall, which has the names of all known servicemen killed or missing in the Vietnam War. The buildings of Tysons Corner are on the horizon, 10 miles (16 km) away. You can't make them out very well, but you can see that Tysons Corner had grown a great deal since the 1965 photo. |
