English: On 25 October 1959, the Wellington (Rongotai) Airport opened amidst crowds of plane-spotters and much fanfare. A range of aircraft performed fly-overs and landings, including jet-powered Vulcan bombers - one of which nearly crashed when it clipped the end of the runway.
Rongotai Airport originally began as a grass runway in November 1929, so to accommodate larger planes a massive construction project was launched in 1952. As well as building a runway into the surf, an entire hill was levelled to create an easier flight path from the North. The aerial photo above is from Archives New Zealand's National Publicity Studios collection. Taken in 1966, it shows the new airport runway, extending from Evans Bay out to Moa Point on the south coast. Title Wellington Airport Publicity Caption Wellington Airport and Evans Bay, Wellington.
