Title
Wembury: gold ingot
Description
English: Cast gold ingot of roughly D-shaped section.

A slightly larger but similarly shaped example from Liddington, Wiltshire was declared to be Treasure and is featured in the Treasure Annual Report 1998-9. One datable associated find of ingots of this type is from Mooghaun, Co. Clare, where other items in the hoard are known to date to the Late Bronze Age (the ingots are missing but there are casts). A small Late Bronze Age hoard from Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Denbighshire contained a similar example of comparable size to the Wembury find.
The simplicity of the form and the lack of archaeological context for most finds of finger-ingots make firm dating difficult; however the composition is compatible with a Bronze Age date.
