English: burning stump and pine sapling On August 21, 2003, the West Kern Fire started on the west side of the Kern River Canyon about 1.5 miles from the boundary with Sequoia National Forest. No significant fire history from the last 100 years has been recorded in this area. 2003 marked the first year of a Fire Use program for the Sequoia National Forest. Therefore, in conjunction with the Sequoia National Forest, the West Kern Fire was managed as a Fire Use project. In addition, the fire was managed with the Inyo National Forest.
