Als Hirten ihre Schafe dort
bewachten in der Nacht,
erklang vom Himmel Engelwort
mit Glanz und Strahlenpracht.

Sie schauten hin, von Schrecken bleich,
er aber sprach: „Habt Mut!
Denn große Freude bring ich euch:
Gott ist den Menschen gut.

Geboren ist in Davids Stadt
der Herr, der Christus heißt
und jedem, der Vertrauen hat,
den Weg des Lebens weist.

In Windeln in der Krippe liegt
das Kind: Es zeigt euch an,
dass Gottes Macht in Armut siegt
und Arme retten kann.“

Und plötzlich war ein großes Heer
von Engeln da und sang,
und dieses Lied verstummt nicht mehr,
die Welt durchdringt sein Klang:

„Verherrlicht ist in Ewigkeit
der Herr, der Treue hält,
und Friede leuchtet weit und breit
