Title: Passion and Perspectives: Policy Challenges and Opportunities for the Wikimedia Communities in the ESEAP

Abstract: Public policy, as "politics as a vocation", takes both passion and perspective. Wikimedia communities in the East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific (ESEAP) region have different experiences and institutional capacity to navigate the changing waters of public policy, especially on those that may not be aligned or opposite to the mission and interests of the Wikimedia movement. The diverse legal, social, and political landscape of the region proved to be a unique challenge and opportunity at the same time. We invite you to join us in this roundtable conversation to discuss the challenges, explore the opportunities together, and learn from each other.

This roundtable conversation aims to bring together Wikimedia communities from across the ESEAP region to spend a dedicated time discussing the current challenges and opportunities faced by these communities when trying to work on a particular public policy issue that is of importance and influential to their Wikimedia works. Examples from this region include the Freedom of Panorama policy advocacy in the Philippines, Open Government Partnership project in Taiwan, responses to the Australian Online Safety Act of 2021 in Australia, the role of Wikimedia in education, and recent digital content platform registration policy Indonesia. The roundtable will aim to help people to get sense of the different challenges faced by their counterparts in the ESEAP region. Notes from this session will inform the possible next steps for a policy advocacy work within the framework of a future ESEAP Hub.
