Description
English: Early in the morning on October 25, 2018, a fire ignited in dense pine forests near Sarti, Greece. Sarti is located on the Sithonia peninsula in northern Greece. The flames spread quickly, fanned by strong winds. A state of emergency was called as firefighters vigorously battled the blaze, calling in helicopters and a large cadre of personnel. Schools were closed in Sarti and many residents were urged to leave their homes for safer ground. Residents were also evacuated from the beach are of Achlada as the fire approached.

On October 26, the Greece fire brigade announced that there was no longer an active fire front near Sarti. More than 160 firemen, 70 fire engines, two water-dropping helicopters, and two firefighting air craft remained on the scene to ensure the safety of the residents as the fire was completely extinguished.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the fire. A large red hot spot marks the area where the thermal bands on the instrument detected high temperatures, which, in this case, were caused by actively-burning fire. A large plume of heavy smoke pours from the fire and blows south and slightly eastward over the Aegean Sea.
