Description
English: William Windover (d.1633) of New Sarum (Salisbury), Wiltshire, Merchant Adventurer of Sarum, Benefactor of the Company of Shoemakers. 1633 portrait, collection of Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum. 4 Coats of arms:
  • "I breed him": Sable, two bars or in chief three demi-lions rampant argent (Paternal arms of Windover ?) (not listed in Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884)
  • "But I fedd him": arms of the Merchant Adventurers's Company of London (Possibly he made his fortune with this Company ?)
  • "I made him free": Per chevron azure and gules, three covered salts argent garnished or overflowing of the third (Arms of the Worshipful Company of Salters) (possibly he was created a Freeman of the City of London, sponsored by the Salters Company ?)
  • "Yet knowne by mee": A shield displaying the date of his death 1633 with a monogram "IX" (Jesus Christus ?) in chief and in base "XXX"
