AUSTRALIAN COMMANDO MEMORIAL // WILSON´S PROMONTORY
Memorial (2):
Wilson´s Promontory was the training ground for Australia and New Zealand´s elite commando force during the darkest days of World War Two (1939 to 1945). Remote, isolated and secure, eight Australian and two New Zealand companies (273 men each) trained here between January 1941 und November 1942. // The Australians were all volunteers and superbly fit. They trained for months in all aspects of guerilla warfare preparing them for some of the most perilous and audacious missions of the war in the South-West Pacific. The New Zealanders were unfortunately disbanded on their return home. // The commandos served in many ways. Some went behind enemy lines to remote and dangerous areas, where they harassed the Japanese and provided intelligence reports. They all fought as Special Force in Papua, New Guinea, Borneo and other islands in the Pacific. // In November 1942 the Army stopped commando training at Wilson´s Promontory and moved it to Canungra, Queensland. // Australia has never forgotten what these brave men achieved. They exhibited the finest of fighting qualities and forged a tradition of ´excellence and service´ that remains as the measure for their successors today. // CAMP LAYOUT 1941 & 2007 // …
Memorial (3):
Australian Independent Companies (Commando Squadrons) in World War Two // The term ´Independent Company´ was used for these units because of their ability to fight independently of other military units. Each company comprised three infantry platoons of 67 men in three sections, plus a headquarters, engineers, signals and a doctor. A high ratio of officers to men was usual. // 1st Company ‒ In 1941 spread through 1200 kilometers of the Pacific Islands with base in New Ireland for early warning and as forward troops. Many captured, 130 drowned in transit as prisoners of war. Unit never reformed. // 2/2nd Company ‒ Feb 1942 overwhelmed by superior Japanese forces on Timor. Subsequently waged a ten month guerilla campaign before evacuation by the Dutch Navy. Later fought in hinterlands New Guinea and New Britain. // 2/3rd Company ‒ Late 1941 sent to New Caledonia, worked with Free French and trained USA forces. New Guinea fighting Wau-Salamaua. Final campaign Balikpapan, Borneo. // 2/4th Company ‒ Relieved 2/2nd Company Timor. Guerilla fighting four months. Later Lae, New Guinea & Tarakan, Borneo. // 2/5th Company ‒ Airlifted to Wau, New Guinea 1942. Daring raid on Salamaua 1942, Mubo & Markham. Landed Balikpapan, Bornea in final campaign of war. // 2/6th Company ‒ Fought Sep 1942 New Guinea on Kokoda Track then northern beaches also Markham & Rami 1943-44, Balikpapan, Borneo 1943. // 2/7th Company ‒ Wau, New Guinea 1942. Joined 2/3rd Company in ´Kanga Force´. Moved 1943 New Guinea Highlands & Ramu Valley to deny enemy movements, 1944-45 Aitape-Wewak. // 2/8th Company ‒ Deployed 1942 Northern Territory, June 1944 moved to Lae, New Guinea then Bougainville November 1944 unil war´s end. // The Cavalry (Commando) Regiments // In late 1943 the Independent Companies (all trained at Wilson´s Prom) were amalgamated with the divisions Cavalry Regiments and renamed Commando Squadrons. // 2/9th, 2/10th, 2/11h & 2/12th Commando Squadrons ‒ originally derived from cavalry squadrons of the 6th & 9th Division, 2nd AIF. 2/9th & 2/10th Commando Squadrons went to Aitape-Wewak, New Guinea. 2/11th & 2/12th Commando Squadrons went to Brunei Bay, Borneo. // ´M´ & ´Z´ Special Units // ´M´ Special Unit - formed 1942 for special secret operations, known as ´Coastwatchers´ operating on the enemy held islands of the Pacific. Intelligence collecting and covert attacks on Japanese positions, especially Bougainville. // ´Z´ Special Unit - 81 highly secret operations in Dutch New Guinea, Malaya to the Philippines and Borneo. Audaciously attacked Singapore Harbour in canoos from small ship ´Krait´ in 1943. Major attacks behind Japanese lines in Dutch East Indies 1945. // AREAS OF COMMANDO OPERATIONS (MARKED BY DOTS) // …
