Mariaggi Hotel (The Albert Block) 227 McDermot Avenue The Albert Block was originally constructed as the Alexander Apartment House in 1901 as a real estate investment for J. S. Tupper, W. J. Tupper and Walter Sacklling. In 1903, Frank Mariaggi, who had come west with the Red River Expedition in 1871, converted the block into a luxurious European-style hotel. The hotel contained 40 suites with brass beds, private baths, electric lights, leather chairs, oriental carpets and telephone communications with points around the city. Additional amenities included a Turkish bath and an oyster bar. The hotel was said to be so luxurious that it had no equal in Manitoba. The hotel was also well known for its fine restaurant run by Mariaggi. The Alexandra was known for its grotto with shaded lights, sparkling fountain and the best drinks in town. Mariaggi was also an excellent chef using fresh produce from his own farm located outside the city. The Mariaggi was very popular with businessmen and travelling salesman. It was also a favourite watering hole for reporters from the section of Winnipeg known as Newspaper Row. After the Royal Alexandra Hotel was built, Mariaggi closed the hotel and restaurant. He moved to Thunder Bay Ontario to open another hotel, before returning to Europe in 1927. |
