| Description |
English: This plaque is located at 201 North Fairfax Street between Cameron Street and Thompsons Alley in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, the site of Wise's Tavern from 1788 to 1792. Washington danced at Wise's Tavern in 1788, in celebration of the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, and for his birthday on two occasions. Earlier in 18th century, the house was known as the Dalton-Herbert House, owned by John Dalton, partner in the firm of Carlyle and Dalton. It was the Anne Lee House for elderly ladies from 1916 to 1974,, and also went by other names. The plaque reads: "Here on April 16, 1789, George Washington was for the first time publicly addressed as President of the United States, his first and greatest of many distinguished successes in that high and honorable office. This tablet was erected in commemoration of this occurance on April 16, 1932 in the bicentenniel year of his birth by the Washington Society of America."
