Summary
[edit]DescriptionWood and concretions (16706865895).jpg | A piece of wood retrieved from the site of the CSS Georgia ironclad shows heavy deterioration in the 150 years the ship has rested on the bottom of the Savannah River. Toredo worms (toredo navalis), or shipworms, living in the Savannah River have destroyed most of the wooden hull and other wooden components of the historic vessel. The crew of the CSS Georgia scuttled the ship in 1864 as Union troops entered Savannah. The Corps of Engineers must remove the remains of the CSS Georgia from the bottom of the Savannah River in order to increase the depth of the shipping channel. Artifacts recovered from the Georgia will be shipped to Texas A&M University for further study and preservation under a contract awarded as part of the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP).
