English: Princess Royal Class No. 6233 "Duchess of Sutherland" in London, Midland and Scottish Livery leaves platform 1 at Plymouth to attach to the "South Devon Explorer" return working organised by the Railway Touring Company. 6233 was very late coming to attach, and its passengers were getting very concerned with the bangs etc. emerging from where it was stabled prior to this move.
In the event the climb of Hermendon banks was unexpectedly surprisingly slow for this 8P rated class of locomotive. A person claiming to be driver on the footplate (and I have no reason to doubt it) reported on social media "Hemerdon bank using only first valve on the regulator because the engine needed a washout and was priming badly if second valve was used, so essentially, half power." This photo was taken from platform 7, and the three roads between platforms 3/4 and 5/6 can be seen in this image. A levelled walkway to access that middle road can also be seen with the part that crosses the track painted yellow. |
