Wounded Marine receives a blood plasma transfusion (NCP 01361), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: "New life is brought to this wounded Marine as blood plasma is administered on the beach at Tarawa. Credit another life to the blood plasma donated to the Red Cross." The Battle of Tarawa took place on November 20-23, 1943 in the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands. It was the first American offensive in the central Pacific region. The U.S. forces attempted to mount an amphibious landing on the small island of Betio but faced fierce opposition from the Japanese defenders. The U.S. troops eventually took the island, but over six thousand Japanese, American, and Korean people died in the battle.
